Baker's Gray Away Wood Seal
Baker's Gray Away Stain is a true professional grade product that has stood the test of time. Virtually un-changed for more than 35 years, BGA is still delivering stunning results, outstanding protection and easy maintenance on all types of outdoor wood. For decks, fences, arbors, gazebos and almost any other type of outdoor wooden structure, it's hard to go wrong with Baker's. With hundreds or even thousands of deck stains, fence stains, wood sealers and paints being marketed by all the big box stores with their powerful big money advertising, we know it can be overwhelming to try and choose the best deck or fence stain product. Of course there is no one perfect product for every situation, but penetrating oil stains are about as close as you can get. Penetrating oils work below the surface to stain, seal, waterproof and condition the wood from within, rather than form a thin film over the surface like most other products on the market. Any product that forms a film on the surface will eventually flake, peel or chip, leaving you with a costly disaster. The combination of technology found in Baker's Gray Away penetrates deep into the wood to not only produce a rich stained appearance, but the conditioning oils also reduce cracking, checking and warping. BGA contains no linseed oil, vegetable oil or other natural oils that are a food source for algae, fungus and mildew. Combine these qualities with Baker's easy application and easy maintenance, and you can see why this stain is the choice of professional contractors across the country.
When it comes to application, about the only things you can do wrong are to apply too little product or leave puddles on the surface. This is not one of those home store stains that boasts an astronomical coverage rate. Think about how little stain you actually put into the wood if you get 200, 300 or more square feet of coverage per gallon of stain like most of the "best rated deck stains" recommend! Properly aged and prepped wood should absorb a penetrating oil stain at an average rate of 80-100 sq. ft / gallon. That means you are putting somewhere between double and triple the amount of stain into the wood compared to most home store products. You do the math and decide which you think will last longer. Application is also extremely easy. If properly applied, drips, runs and lap marks are almost impossible. A couple years down the road when it's time for a re-coat, maintenance is just as easy. No stripping or removal necessary, just clean and re-apply!
When choosing a stain color, remember that it's the pigment in the stain that protects your wood from the damaging UV rays. The clear formula will do a great job of sealing and waterproofing, but it WILL NOT protect the wood from the natural graying process caused by UV exposure. Dark Pecan, Redwood, Gray Stone, Dark Gray, New Dark Gray, Medium Gray, Ebony, Taupe and Driftwood are special order colors and may require a few extra days for shipping, but don't worry, shipping is always free to all 45 contiguous states where Baker's can be shipped!

Cleaning and Preparation Instructions
Cleaning and prep is the most important part of any wood staining project. If the wood is not aged and cleaned properly, the life of your stain will be greatly reduced. Also, remember penetrating oil stains cannot be applied over other stains or sealers. If you have previously stained or sealed wood, you will need to remove any existing stain or sealer before application of Baker's Gray Away. Un-Treated New Wood: New wood (cedar, pine, spruce etc.) should be allowed to weather for 4-6 weeks after construction. If needed, wood should then be gently cleaned with a percarbonate cleaner. Never use pressure higher than 1500 psi when cleaning wood! After cleaning, neutralize and restore pH with an acidic brightener, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely before application of Baker's Gray Away.
Pressure Treated New Wood: New pressure treated wood should always be allowed to weather for at least one year after construction. This is very important because the pores of the wood are clogged with chemicals that will not allow the stain to properly penetrate and bond. After one year, clean the wood thoroughly with a sodium hydroxide or percarbonate wood cleaner. Never use pressure higher than 1500 psi when cleaning wood! After cleaning, neutralize and restore pH with an acidic brightener, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely before application of Baker's Gray Away.
Old Weathered Wood: Unprotected old wood is typically various shades of gray and black. This is due to mildew and ultraviolet light attack on the wood surface. Remove mildew and restore color with a sodium hydroxide or percarbonate wood cleaner. If wood cleaner is not available, use a mixture of 1 gallon household bleach to 1/2 gallon of water. Never use pressure higher than 1500 psi when cleaning wood! After cleaning, neutralize and restore pH with an acidic brightener, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely before application of Baker's Gray Away.
Previously Stained Wood: Baker's Gray Away wood seal is designed for application on clean, bare wood surfaces. If old sealers, stains or finishes are present they must be removed completely before application of Baker's Gray Away Stain. ALWAYS TEST ON A SMALL AREA to be sure the stripper you are using will remove the the old coating! All stains, sealers and coatings are not the same. There are many good strippers available, but all are different and work differently on different coatings. Be sure you have a stripper designed to remove the type of coating you have. Strip wood according to stripper manufacturer's instructions and be sure to follow all safety precautions. After stripping, neutralize and restore pH with an acidic brightener, rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely before application of Baker's Gray Away.

Application Instructions
Apply 2 heavy coats with low pressure sprayer, brush, roller or applicator pad. Remember some areas or certain boards will be more absorbent than others, be sure to give the wood all it wants to drink, especially on the first flood coat. Cedar already contains natural oils, so it will typically not absorb as much stain as pine.

Coverage Rates: Coverage rates are approximate and will vary depending on wood porosity and temperature. Coverage rates based on total combined two coat application. Apply 2nd coat wet-on-wet. Do not allow to dry more than 2 hours between coats.
Cedar: 100-150 sq. ft. / gallon
New un-treated pine: 100-150 sq. ft. / gallon
Weathered pine: 80-100 sq. ft. / gallon
Decks (hand brushing): If applying by hand with a brush, roller pad etc. progress will likely be much slower than if spraying. With this method, puddles are also much less likely. When hand brushing, it is usually better to divide the deck into sections and finish a section completely before moving on. Remember two coats are needed and you should never allow more than a couple hours between coats. On less absorbent woods such as cedar or new pine etc. wipe off all excess un-absorbed product after 30 minutes. Allow to dry 48 hours before traffic.
Fences (spraying): Apply heavy saturating 1st coat to entire surface. Allow stain to penetrate until no wet areas are visible. Apply lighter 2nd coat to entire surface.
Fences (hand brushing): If applying by hand with a brush, roller, pad etc. progress will be much slower than if spraying. When hand brushing, it is usually better to divide the fence into sections and finish a section completely before moving on. Remember two coats are needed and you should never allow more than a couple hours between coats.
Note: Penetrating oil stains are not recommended for use on Furniture, Benches, Playsets, etc.
Special Considerations
Gray Tone Colors: Due to the differences in pigments, the gray-tone colors do not penetrate as quickly and easily than the other colors. This is especially true on decks. We recommend the following changes to the normal application process for best results:
1. Allow the first coat to dry a minimum of four hours before application of the second coat.
2. Work both coats into the surface with a large stain brush until completely absorbed. Do not leave puddles or any un-absorbed product on the surface. Work any un-absorbed product to more absorbent areas with stain brush.
Also keep in mind that unlike other stains, BGA is a fully penetrating product that leaves no coating or colored film over the surface. Penetrating oil stains work by coloring the wood internally, much like a dye works on fabric. This means the color, contrasts and natural variations of the canvas WILL show through in the final appearance. This is especially important to understand when considering the gray tones. Please understand BGA does NOT mask the natural beauty of the wood with a paint-like appearance and the gray tones will not look like painted wood or a solid color stain.
Landscaping, plants and vegetation: Plants, flowers and grass can be protected by wetting them thoroughly with water before, during and after the cleaning and staining processes. Whenever possible, always cover landscaping, vegetation and other items not intended to be stained.
Direct hot sunlight: Direct hot sunlight will cause product to penetrate deeper and faster than is preferred. This will often result in excessive product being used and/or lighter color than is desired. Although we do not recommend application in direct hot sun, it is often un-avoidable. To counteract the rapid penetration, in sunny areas allow more time between the 1st and 2nd coat. This will allow the first coat to begin to "set up" and slow the penetration of the 2nd coat. Still never allow more than two hours between coats!
Note: Penetrating oil stains are not recommended for use on Furniture, Benches, Playsets, etc.
Maintenance
Like all things, proper wood care requires scheduled maintenance. Once properly applied, Baker's Gray Away wood seal will need a light cleaning and maintenance coat every 2 - 3 years on decks and every 4 - 5 years on fences. Routine and maintenance cleaning should be done with a weak percarbonate cleaner or weak bleach water solution. Before re-application of stain, be sure to neutralize and balance the pH after cleaning with an acidic brightener. Brightener is not required for periodic cleaning unless stain is being re-applied. Never clean with a degreaser as it may remove the protective oils in the sealer.
